Death in the Liberties by Tony O'Reilly

Synopsis

During the Irish War of Independence, a young Dublin couple, Nell and Christopher Flinter, are recruited by the IRA. Nell is planted in Dublin Castle where she becomes the eyes and ears of Michael Collins, Director of Intelligence. Christopher, an experienced ex-British Army soldier, quickly rises through the ranks and becomes the leader of a small group of assassins.

Unknown to them, the murderous American spy, Levon Mordaunt, is still alive. Shot by Nell and left for dead in the tunnels under the Monto brothel district, he survived. Now, horribly disfigured by the shooting, he is slowly being driven mad by the desire for vengeance. He must find Christopher, the man he blames for his downfall.

Captain Robert Byatt arrives in Dublin and discovers that his brother, Major Jonathan Byatt, has been buried covertly in a neglected section of the military cemetery. He gradually uncovers the hidden truth: Jonathan was tortured and murdered by the monstrous Mordaunt. He vows to avenge him.

Meanwhile, Mordaunt begins to close in on Christopher, killing anyone who gets in his way.
